It was a devastating event for the community and it left many feeling helpless and scared. In response, Herrera created the IHUG Lamps to bring a sense of hope and optimism to the city.
The lamps are shaped like hearts and feature the words “IHUG” in bold lettering. These words are intended to remind people that even in the darkest of times, love and friendship can still prevail. Herrera also included several solar panels on the lamps so that they could be powered by the sun, symbolizing the power of hope and light.
In the years since the lamps were installed, they have become a source of pride for the city and its citizens. The lamps have been featured in several local and national publications, and are now seen as a symbol of the city’s commitment to unity and hope. In 2017, Herrera was honored for his work with the IHUG Lamps and received the California Arts Council’s Artist Fellowship Award.
