AND I CAUGHT UP WITH PORTIA JOHNSON, THE WOMAN BEHIND THE NONPROFIT THAT’S LOOKING TO EMPOWER OTHERS TO TAKE CONTROL OF THEIR HEALTH. WE’RE GOING TO LIMIT OURSELVES BACK TO USING LOOK, LOOK, TAKE YOUR HEALTH SERIOUSLY. TAKE YOUR MENTAL HEALTH SERIOUSLY. YOU KNOW, WE ARE DYING. YOU KNOW, WE REALLY ARE. AND WE’RE FACING A LOT OF HEALTH ISSUES THAT ARE LEAVING US VERY, VERY SICK. SO COME DOWN HARD FOR THOSE REASONS. PORTIA JOHNSON CREATED BLACK GIRL HEALTH AND ITS NONPROFIT OFFSHOOT BLACK GIRL FOUNDATION. SHE TELLS ME THE NONPROFIT ALLOWS HER TO OFFER FREE ANNUAL EVENTS THAT INCREASE ACCESS TO HEALTH CARE FOR WOMEN OF COLOR. YOU HAVE FITNESS WORKSHOPS. YOU HAVE NUTRITIONAL BASED WORKSHOPS BECAUSE WE BELIEVE THAT WHAT YOU PUT IN YOUR BODY IS VERY IMPORTANT AND COULD AFFECT ANXIETY. STRESS. EXHALE. THE ONE YOU SEE TODAY IS THE MINDS MATTER WORKSHOP THAT BEGAN FOUR YEARS AGO. LIKE HER BUSINESS, IT’S GROWN A LOT. THE EVENT NOW PAIRS MENTAL HEALTH RESOURCES WITH PHYSICAL ONES. THAT IS IMPORTANT. IF WE ARE GOING TO HEAL THE MIND, WE HAVE TO HEAL THE BODY FIRST. AS FOR THE TURNOUT, IT’S INCREASING TOO, WHICH HAS CREATED A DEMAND FOR MORE EVENTS. THEY LOVE WHAT WE’RE DOING AND THEY’RE FEELING THAT WE ARE IMPACTING THEIR LIVES AND HELPING THEM. Update:Black Girl Health held it’s workshop on Saturday at the East Shore Library in Harrisburg. The purpose of the workshops was to bring awareness to your mental health and take it seriously.They host fitness workshops and nutrition workshops that can help improve anxiety and stress.If you missed the one in York they are hosting another workshop in Washington D.C. next month.This weekend, ‘Black Girl Health’ will host its annual health workshop at the East Shore Library in Harrisburg. From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., community members are invited to come out and enjoy a variety of workshops. According to the founder, the goal is to empower women of color to take control of their health.”Look, take your health seriously. Take your mental health seriously. We are dying.
